Shaka Hislop began his career with Reading after being scouted during a friendly indoor game. Despite a challenging start, he became popular among fans and was named the club’s “Player of the Year” twice. He had to compete with Pavel Srnek, the former goalkeeper for Newcastle United, to begin competitions.

Newcastle lost their lead and finished second after Hislop’s injury in January, allowing Srnek to reclaim the starting position. In 1996-97, Hislop observed Srnek working on the nets, just as he did in the previous season.
Hislop regained the starting position due to Srnek’s mistakes and declining performance. Hislop, who had only started in the league once before this year, helped his team win 7-1 against Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle secured second place in the season, ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool. Hislop kept his starting position because of the goal differential.
West Ham United had a rotating goalkeeper strategy last season, but with Mikloko gone and Lama’s loan ending, Hislop was brought in by Redknapp to be the new starting goalkeeper.
