Burger had a successful amateur career in baseball, playing for Christian Brothers College High School and Missouri State University. He was remembered for his performance as a freshman and sophomore, gaining prizes and hitting outstanding statistics. In his junior year, he resumed to excel and was anointed Player of the Year by the Missouri Valley Conference.
Jake was recruited by the Chicago White Sox in the foremost competition of the 2017 MLB draft.
