After university, Taurasi was recruited as the foremost overall preference by the Phoenix Mercury in 2004. Despite a losing record the earlier year, Taurasi made an influence by achieving 22 points in her debut competition and averaging 17 points for the season. Although her group didn’t make it to the playoffs, Taurasi was identified as an All-Star and obtained Rookie of the Year.
In the following season, she averaged 16 points each round despite an ankle injury. She became an All-Star, but her team still didn’t make the playoffs. The next season, a new coach and another superstar rookie were added to the roster, creating high anticipation for the Mercury.
In 2006, Taurasi had a historic season with the Mercury. She performed well under Westhead’s coaching, directing the league in scoring and breaking a record for points in a single season.
