Steve Perry: Career and Achievements
Steve Perry began his music career in his early 20s with a band called Ice, where he sang while Scott Mathews played drums and guitar. They could not find management or gain much exposure despite recording many tracks. Perry attempted to break into the music industry with various bands, including Pieces and Alien Project. Despite his efforts, he was unable to secure a record deal. After the death of a band member in Alien Project, Perry decided to quit music and return home.
Perry almost gave up his dream of becoming a vocalist until his mother convinced him to reply to Journey's invitation. The San Francisco band was struggling, and they were interested in Perry's voice after hearing a recording of Alien Project. He replaced the band's singer and debuted on their 1978 album Infinity.
Steve Perry transformed Journey's progressive rock sound into a pop-infused style that initially caused uncertainty among fans and band members. However, the success of their new direction was undeniable as it led to radio play for the first time. Perry sang for Journey on multiple albums, including Evolution, Departure, Dream After Dream, Captured, Escape, Frontiers, Raised on Radio, and Trial by Fire. Their song "Open Arms" was a very successful single that reached number two on the charts.
