He taught himself to play multiple instruments at a young age and received private lessons in music theory. He enlisted at Regent Street Polytechnic to learn architecture in 1962.

At Regent Street Polytechnic, Wright met musicians Roger Waters and Nick Mason. They joined a band called Sigma 6, formed by their classmate Clive Metcalf. Wright played piano or rhythm guitar/trombone, depending on availability.
