Louis Lou Holtz was born in Follansbee, West Virginia, United States, on 6 January, 1937. He was raised in East Liverpool, Ohio, where he used to live with his parents Anna Marie and Andrew Holtz. His father was a bus driver, and his mother was a housewife. His father is of German and Irish descent, and his grandparents were immigrants of Chernobyl, Ukraine. Holtz was raised as a Roman Catholic by his parents.

Holtz went to East Liverpool High School, where he completed his schooling. He later went to Kent State University, where he began playing college football Linebacker. He did very well in his career, and in 1959 he completed his graduation from there. Soon after completing his graduation, he moved as a football coach. He joined the University of Iowa, and later achieved some serious acclaim.

LouHoltz was married to Beth Barcus from 1961 to 2020. His wife died from cancer in 2020, and since then he has been living a very lonely life. Though, he has four children with her, and out of that four, three are Notre Dame Graduates. Holtz currently resides in Florida, where he is enjoying his retirement.

Lou Holtz began his career way back in 1956, when he joined Kent State University. He joined the University team as a Linebacker. Though not much is known about his college career, he left the football team in 1957. Soon, he focused on completing his graduation from there. In 1959, his graduation was over, and in 1960, he joined University of Iowa as an assistant coach. A year later, he moved to College of William and Mary, where he served as an assistant coach till 1963.

He later worked with a variety of sides such as University of Connecticut, University of South Carolina, Ohio State University, and many more. In 1976, he moved to New York Jets of the National Football League, where he worked for one season. Later he worked with NCAA sides and division I teams. He announced his retirement from the University of South Carolina in 2004.

As a coach, he has won one National Championship, oneSoCon, one ACC and one SWC title. As far as his individual awards are concerned, he has been honored with Paul Bear Bryant Award, Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, SEC coach of the Year, Presidential Medal of Freedom, college football hall of fame, etc. In 1990, he joined CBS news, where he worked as a TV College football analyst. In 2005, he joined ESPN, where he worked till 2015.
