In 2004, Swanson commenced his mixed martial arts career, contesting in unsanctioned battles before entering the WEC in 2007. He won his debut fight with a guillotine choke hold and moved on to win various more games. Nevertheless, he suffered a defeat to Jens Pulver through a guillotine choke at WEC 31.
