James Ager Worthy was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, United States, on 27 February 1961. Worthy was raised in North Carolina, where he used to live with his parents. He decided to be a basketball player at a very young age, and he began playing amateur basketball at his high school in Ashbrook High.

He achieved massive success playing for his high school team, in his senior season recording 21.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. He was later selected for various honors and he also won the state championship.Worthy is currently divorced. He was married to Angela Wilder since 1984, and in 1996, they decided to get divorced.
