On 1 August, Doug was born in 1956 in the beautiful city of Arthur, North Dakota. He is the son of Katherine and Joseph Boyd Burgum. Doug visited North Dakota State University and later applied to Stanford Graduate School of Business. He began a chimney-sweeping business, and it acquired attention from the newspaper and Stanford admissions office.
Burgum learned business at Stanford and became buddies with Steve Ballmer, who would thereafter be CEO of Microsoft. After finishing his MBA, he operated as a management counselor in Chicago. He obtained honorary doctorates from North Dakota State University and the University of Mary.
